Luis Fitch Named 2024 Distinguished Mexican: Honored for Art, Culture, and Community Impact.

Distinguished Mexicans Award (Mexicanos Distinguidos)—one of the highest honors given by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME). This prestigious award is granted only once a year to one Mexican living abroad who has made extraordinary contributions in their field while promoting Mexico’s culture and image internationally.

A Commitment to Art and Culture.

As an artist, designer, and cultural educator, Luis Fitch has dedicated his career to using art as a bridge for social change, education, and artistic storytelling. His creative work amplifies Mexican and Latinx identities and provides accessible, hands-on learning opportunities through free community workshops.

For years, Luis has led workshops that introduce participants of all ages to wheat-pasting, stencil art, and design techniques. He ensures that art remains accessible to immigrant communities, underserved youth, and emerging artists. Through these initiatives, he empowers individuals to embrace their cultural heritage and develop artistic skills that foster self-expression and civic engagement.

Some of his most impactful contributions include:
✔Hosting free workshops at major cultural institutions such as the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Mercado Central, and Walker Art Center.
✔ Providing bilingual (English/Spanish) art education to ensure accessibility for Spanish-speaking communities.
✔ Illustrating four U.S. Postal Service commemorative stamps celebrating Latino heritage.
✔ Creating Target’s first-ever Día de Muertos art collection designed by a Mexican artist.
✔ Serving as Chair of the Minnesota State Flag and Emblem Redesign Commission, leading the creation of a more inclusive visual identity for the state.

A Singular Honor on the Global Stage.

The Distinguished Mexicans Award is an exclusive recognition given only once a year to one individual worldwide. It honors Mexican nationals who have lived abroad for at least five years and excelled in sciences, academia, technology, business, creative industries, innovation, and social responsibility.

Being chosen as the sole recipient of this prestigious award in 2024 is a testament to Luis Fitch’s unparalleled dedication to Mexican culture, creativity, and community empowerment. Through his free workshops and public art, he ensures that art remains a powerful tool for inclusion, education, and cultural pride.
