Luis Fitch’s Day of the Dead Digital Art Sells Out in Less Than a Second.
Luis Fitch’s artwork continues to break new ground, most recently in digital collectibles. On November 2, 2021, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) released Fitch’s Day of the Dead stamp designs as nonfungible tokens (NFTs) on the VeVe platform—a first for the agency. In an astonishing display of demand, the collection sold out in less than a second.
Chris Karpenko, USPS executive director of brand marketing, described the initiative as “offering a new way to collect and a way to remain relevant and innovative with new audiences.” The digital collectibles, also called “licensed digital collectible stamp art,” were priced at $6 each upon release. However, resale prices soared between $200 and $2,000 within hours, depending on rarity.
A New Era for Collecting
Traditionally, the USPS has avoided offering rare collectibles, prioritizing accessibility for all stamp collectors. However, these NFTs introduced an element of scarcity that surprised many. While collectors in the digital space may have been frustrated by the near-instant sellout, physical versions of the Day of the Dead stamps remain available at post offices across the country, allowing collectors to own a tangible piece of this historic release.
As an artist whose work merges tradition with contemporary design, Luis Fitch sees this moment as a reflection of how art continues to evolve across different platforms. His work remains a bridge between culture, heritage, and innovation, whether physically or digitally.
