Mexican artist Luis Fitch recently collaborated with the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Consulate of Mexico in Saint Paul to celebrate Día de la Niña y el Niño through a hands-on cultural art experience for nearly 100 elementary school students.
The event welcomed first-grade students from Richfield Dual Language School and Columbia Heights Public Schools for a day centered on creativity, cultural identity, and artistic exploration. Students learned about the work and story of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo while participating in interactive portrait-making activities using paper, scissors, glue, and mixed materials inspired by Kahlo’s imagery and self-expression.
The workshop introduced young students to the power of visual storytelling while fostering an accessible, joyful environment in which art became a tool for cultural connection and belonging. Through bilingual engagement and hands-on participation, the event encouraged students to see themselves reflected in creative spaces and artistic traditions.
For Luis Fitch, the collaboration reflects his ongoing commitment to using art as a bridge between communities, generations, and cultures through educational programming rooted in Mexican and Latinx visual traditions.
